Description
Resourceful • koki’o kea (Ko-kee-o kay-ah)
Hawaiian white hibiscus
This incredible plant reminds us of the importance of being resourceful and using all our available resources to help those around us.
This design is inspired by an endemic species called Hibiscus arnottianus, also known as Koki’o kea (pronounced Ko-kee-o kay-ah) in Hawaiian, and more commonly called Hawaiian white hibiscus . This flower has three subspecies that differ in appearance and shape, and which have many uses, both ancient and modern. Koki’o kea was used to make leis (flower garlands) and for medicinal purposes. For example, the flower bud was used with the taproot bark to detoxify the body, and the stem was used to make ropes for various purposes, both on land and at sea. This variety of hibiscus is native to the rainforests of the mountains of Moloka’i and O’ahu.
