It all started in 1963 as the Central Radio and Record Bar when radio and records were the only types of music media. Bill and Helen Nitransky had a dream and opened a small store in downtown Welland across the street from the fire hall on Hellems Ave. On the shelves were portable radios, black and white TV’s, and record players. In the centre of the store were bins of 45s and LPs. Back then, 45s sold for 69¢ and LPs for $2.99.A year later, on Sunday February 9, 1964, an up and coming group from Liverpool, England by the name the “The Beatles” appeared in America for the first time on the Ed Sullivan show. That night changed the entire music industry and the lives of many people. It seemed as if everyone wanted a guitar, bass, or set of drums. They wanted to be just like the Beatles. Back then, there weren’t many manufacturers so choice was limited; Stewart drums, and Fender and Kent guitars & basses.
In 1969 the store was moved over to its current location at 252 East Main Street, still in the heart of the Niagara Region in downtown Welland. Although no longer dealing with records or radios, demand for store space increased over the years with a growing number of guitars, drums, and other insrument stock. In 1985 the property next door was purchased and the two buildings were combined with an expansion in front connecting the two. The rest is now history. Family owned and operated since day one, the store is now managed by the oldest son Bob Nitransky follwing his father's passing in 1988.
